“This is one of the new songs we’re working on,” Seb said over the crescendo of the music. “What do you think?”

“It’s good!” Ty said, and it was. He wanted to hear it from the beginning.

Seb smiled, his shoulders moving back and forth to the rhythm. “Let’s hope the label agrees. By the way, I hear you might have some lyrics we should check out. You’ve been holding out on us, eh?”

“I don’t know if I’d call them lyrics.”

“Kayla seems to think so.” Seb gave him a knowing grin.

“We’ll see.” Ty didn’t know how it worked with record labels, but he’d heard some horror stories. He hoped the Lillys had a good relationship with theirs.

The song ended, and there was a muffled chorus of whoop! from the other side of the glass.

“I think we have it,” Richie said, still twisting and sliding pieces of the console.

“Where’d you learn to do all of this?” Ty asked him, stepping closer to inspect the board.

“Right here—my dad built this place when I was little,” Richie replied.

“You’re standing next to music royalty,” Seb said.

Richie chuckled. “Hardly.”

There were pieces of masking tape at the bottom of each slider’s column, and Ty tried to discern the scribbles that someone—presumably Richie—had jotted down. A few were clear—bass, guitar, lead. Others weren’t.

“Who or what is Tom 1?”

Richie pointed to the monitor. “That’s the mic on Kayla’s left tom drum, that’s the right, this is the kick, the snare, etc.,” he continued, pointing them out.

Ty realized the notes on the tape were mirrored on the monitors. It was all very…precise. He’d always thought of recording as a more haphazard affair.

“Impressive,” he said. “I guess you’d need a lifetime to learn.”

“Not really,” Richie replied. “Toni’s picking it up pretty fast.”

“Toni?”

“She’s a partner here,” Seb said, no small amount of pride in his voice.

Toni wasn’t much older than Ty, if at all. “Wow. Did she grow up in the business too?”

Seb made a gesture with his hand that said kinda. “She’s been around music most of her life but not in studios. No, she was just determined to own one.”

“And I talked her into becoming my partner here,” Richie finished.

Ty was equal parts impressed and envious. It sounded like Toni had set a goal for herself and achieved it. Meanwhile, he was still trying to figure out what to do with his life.

“I need food.” Tiff burst into the room with that pronouncement. Her eyes went wide when she noticed Ty. “Oh, hells yeah! Bookworm!”

Tiff launched herself at him, and Ty barely had enough time to brace himself to catch her. Laughing, he returned her enthusiastic hug. “Good to see you again,” he said as he released her.

Tiff held on to his arms. “It’s so good to see you.”

She glanced over her shoulder, and Ty followed her gaze to Kayla, who made her way through the other room toward them.

“Make her squirm a little,” Tiff said, winking.

Ty’s gaze locked on Kayla’s, his throat suddenly dry as she walked into the room.

“Hey, Ty,” Toni said.
